Description
How many confrontations does it take to make one issue of them? In our case, one hundred. We proudly state we have reached this centenary mark with the current issue. In addition we are forty years old in 2008. We're proud of these figures, though we know that no literary magazine rests on its figures (unless it's a wildly successful, commercially based one). Our tally has given us thought of our past, of how we began and how we've kept to our mission and its byways. We began in 1968 when the word confrontation was in the air as well as on the streets. The notion of facing up to issues directly and openly and not worrying about manners was the manner of the time, and we wanted to share in that representation. We wanted to be a part of the activism around us, but we were not an activist journal--in the conventional sense of political or even social activism. Perhaps the proper term is soulful activism. In any case, we wanted to be a part of that exciting and vital mass, but more than simply engage in the passion of a movement we wanted to explore the currents swirling in those waters of both discontent and hope for a better world. Our notion of confrontation was not confrontational but prismatic--we wanted to tackle in each issue a theme and see it from at least two sides. We wished as well for the sight of more sides, for we wanted a true prism (though we did not then and do not now know what a true prism is--a prism is a prism by virtue of its observational sides; it can be neither a true prism or a false one, merely a less prismatic one).
